Packaging & Customs Rules

What You Can and Cannot Ship

UK Border Force has strict rules on items entering the country, especially food. Here is what is allowed and what must stay behind.

What You Can Ship

Approved for Value Export & Express Services

  • Dried & Packaged Foodstuffs: Egusi (ground), ogbono, blended crayfish, dry pepper, native soup spices, seasoning cubes, yam flour (elubo), plantain flour, and garri.
  • Dried Fish & Seafood: Well-dried catfish, stockfish, mangala fish, and dried prawns (strictly limited to 10kg per shipment and must be vacuum-sealed).
  • Dried Goat Meat: Maximum of 2kg per waybill (must be fully dehydrated and sealed).
  • Nigerian Textiles & Fashion: Ankara fabrics, lace, Aso-oke, agbada, custom dresses, footwear, and fashion accessories.
  • Natural Beauty & Personal Care: 100% unrefined raw shea butter (in solid sealed containers), black soap, and hair care items.
  • Documents & Educational Materials: International passports, academic transcripts, legal contracts, certificates, and religious or literature books.

What You Cannot Ship

Prohibited by UK Border Force & Aviation Safety

  • Perishables & Wet Foods: Fresh raw meat, fresh chicken, frozen fish, cooked meals, soups, or moisture-laden vegetables.
  • Dairy & Egg Products: Fresh milk, cheese, and unpasteurized food items.
  • Fresh Produce: Fresh fruits, live plants, seeds with soil, or cuttings regulated by DEFRA.
  • Hazardous & Flammables: Perfumes, body sprays, aerosols, bleach, flammable solvents, or gasoline.
  • Loose Lithium Batteries: Standalone power banks, loose batteries, and uncertified electronics.
  • Contraband & Weapons: Firearms, ammunition, explosives, controlled drugs, and counterfeit currencies.

Mandatory UK Food Packaging Standards

UK border officers inspect food packages closely. Make sure your items meet these standards before you send:

1. Airtight Vacuum Packaging

Dried fish, crayfish, and spices must be sealed in heavy-duty vacuum bags. This keeps smells locked in and stops contamination.

2. Complete Dryness

Everything must be completely dry. Any dampness during flight will cause mold, which leads UK customs to seize and destroy the box.

3. English Content Labels

Label each bag clearly in English (for instance: 'Ground Melon Seed / Egusi' or 'Dried Catfish'). Clear labels help UK inspectors clear your box without delay.
