Understanding Volumetric Weight: How to Save Money on Your Imports

If you have ever imported goods to Nigeria, you might have noticed that your shipping invoice was higher than expected. This often happens because of a concept called volumetric weight. Many importers focus only on the actual physical weight of their packages when budgeting. However, air freight carriers look at both weight and size when calculating shipping costs. Let us look at what volumetric weight is and how you can use this knowledge to save money on your next import.

What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight, which is also known as dimensional weight, is a calculation that reflects the density of a package. A large, light item takes up more space on an airplane than a small, heavy one.

For example, if you ship a large box filled with pillows, it will weigh very little. However, it takes up a lot of space in the cargo hold. If the shipping company charged you only by physical weight, they would lose money because that space could have been used for heavier goods. Conversely, a small box containing a laptop is heavy but compact. Air carriers charge based on whichever weight is greater: the actual physical weight or the volumetric weight. This rule is standardized by the International Air Transport Association.

How is volumetric weight calculated?

Calculating volumetric weight is simple. First, you measure the length, width, and height of your package in centimeters. Then, you multiply these numbers and divide by a standard shipping factor.

For air freight, the standard divisor is usually 5000. Here is the formula:

Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length x Width x Height in cm) / 5000

For example, if you have a box that measures 50 cm by 40 cm by 30 cm, the calculation would look like this:

  • 50 x 40 x 30 = 60,000
  • 60,000 / 5000 = 12 kg

If the physical weight of this box is only 5 kg, you will be billed for 12 kg because the volumetric weight is higher. If the physical weight is 15 kg, you will be billed for 15 kg.

Tips to save money on volumetric weight

Knowing how this calculation works allows you to reduce your shipping costs through smart planning.

  • Choose the right box size: Avoid using a box that is too large for your items. If there is empty space inside, you are paying to ship air. Fill any empty spaces with bubble wrap or packing paper only when necessary to protect fragile items.
  • Consolidate your items: If you are buying multiple small items, ask your supplier or shipping partner to pack them together in a single box rather than shipping them separately.
  • Remove unnecessary packaging: Some items come in bulky plastic or cardboard retail boxes that add volume without protecting the item. If you do not need the retail boxes, ask your supplier to remove them.
