Navigating US FDA Entry Requirements for Traditional Foodstuffs
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) monitor all food entering the country. Following compliant preparation protocols guarantees smooth entry through US port facilities:
- Completely Dehydrated Dry Goods Only: Fresh meat, poultry, fresh fruits, and perishable items are strictly prohibited. Ogbono seeds (Irvingia gabonensis) and herbal pepper soup blends must be thoroughly dried and free from moisture to prevent mold and insect infestation during transit.
- Proper Product Labeling: Packages intended for personal household consumption must be accompanied by an accurate commercial declaration identifying the common English culinary name and specifying that the goods are for personal domestic consumption.
- Odor-Proof Barrier Packaging: Traditional Nigerian soup spices carry rich aromas that attract customs inspection dogs at US port sorting facilities. Heat-sealed vacuum packaging completely neutralizes scents, ensuring parcels move through customs without unnecessary inspection delays.

How to Package Ogbono and Pepper Soup Spices for Air Cargo
Proper parcel preparation maintains product freshness and prevents damage during flight:
- Ensure Zero Moisture: Verify that ogbono seeds (whole or milled) and spice ingredients are completely bone-dry before packaging. Dampness trapped in plastic can cause clumping and spoilage.
- Vacuum Seal in Heavy-Duty Food Pouches: Pour spices and seeds into puncture-resistant vacuum seal bags. Evacuate all air using a heat sealer to produce solid, compact bricks.
- Secondary Scent Barrier: Place the vacuum-sealed pouches into a secondary metallic Mylar bag or heavy poly sleeve, taping the edges to block all aroma transfer.
- Rigid Corrugated Outer Boxing: Pack the sealed pouches snugly into a heavy, double-wall corrugated cardboard box. Fill any empty spaces with crumpled kraft paper to keep items from shifting during transport.
- Clear Item Identification: Label each pouch with clear product descriptions (e.g., Dried Wild Mango Seeds – Ogbono for Culinary Use; Traditional Pepper Soup Spice Mix – 100% Dried Herbal Seasoning).
Optimizing Volumetric Weight on Food Shipments
Air cargo carriers evaluate shipments by comparing physical gross weight against dimensional volumetric weight, billing for the larger value. The universal air cargo calculation is:
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length in cm × Width in cm × Height in cm) ÷ 5000
Milled ogbono and spice blends are naturally dense. Vacuum sealing compresses them into compact bricks, eliminating dead air space inside the carton and keeping your volumetric billable weight minimal.
Frequently Asked Questions
